Nerve surgery

Nerve surgery, also known as neurosurgery or peripheral nerve surgery, involves surgical interventions aimed at treating conditions affecting the nerves throughout the body. These procedures are typically performed by neurosurgeons or specialized peripheral nerve surgeons. Nerve surgery may be indicated for various reasons, including traumatic injuries, compressive neuropathies, tumors affecting nerve tissue, and chronic neuropathic pain conditions. Here are some common types of nerve surgery:

Nerve repair: In cases of traumatic nerve injuries, such as lacerations or transections, nerve repair surgery aims to reconnect the damaged nerve ends to restore function and promote regeneration. This may involve suturing the nerve ends directly or using nerve grafts from other parts of the body to bridge the gap.

Nerve transfer: In situations where a nerve is irreparably damaged or severed, nerve transfer surgery may be performed to reroute a healthy nerve from a nearby muscle or nerve to restore function in the affected area. This technique is often used in brachial plexus injuries or facial paralysis.

Tumor removal: Nerve surgery may be necessary to remove tumors or growths affecting nerve tissue, such as schwannomas, neurofibromas, or nerve sheath tumors. The goal is to excise the tumor while preserving nerve function to the greatest extent possible.
